Corbitt Lab

About

The research focus of the Corbitt Lab is the effects of environmental signals (e.g., endocrine disrupting compounds, toxins, diet, photoperiod) on the central nervous system. We have also expanded our focus from the CNS to include other targets, such as liver, fat and gut microbiome. The Corbitt Lab collaborates extensively with the lab of Dr. Rachel Neal and the two share lab space (the CaN Lab) in the Life Sciences Building.

Other work has included a clinical study investigating the timing of multiple sclerosis symptoms in women, effects of prenatal exposure to arsenic in drinking water on reproductive behavior and testicular gene expression in mice and measures of anxiety-like behavior in mice exposed to chemicals prenatally.

Dr. Corbitt is the Biology Honors Director, tasked with helping biology majors find undergraduate research opportunities and advising them through the process of completing a senior thesis. She also co-directs several research training programs for trainees ranging from transfer students (ULBB) to upperclassmen (KEEP) to post-bacs (UL-BIOMED-PREP).

Key Research Areas

  • Effects of environmental signals (e.g., endocrine disrupting compounds, toxins, diet, photoperiod) on the central nervous system
  • Effect of prenatal cigarette smoke exposure on response to high-fat/high-fructose diet in adulthood
  • Timing of multiple sclerosis symptoms in women (link)
  • Novel techniques to teach neuroscience in the K-12 classroom
