Physics
Expanding the boundaries of what we know about matter, energy and the universe.
Physics research labs
Physics research at UofL reaches from the subatomic to the cosmic, with groups probing the fundamental forces of the universe, engineering quantum technologies and discovering the properties of nanomaterials. Our faculty leverage world-class observatories, advanced laser systems and powerful computational methods to open new frontiers in astrophysics, condensed matter and quantum science.
Astronomy & astrophysics research labs
Astronomy & astrophysics groups study the formation and evolution of galaxies, atmospheric dynamics of planets and Earth, stellar structure and the interstellar medium using ground-based and space-based telescopes including the James Webb Space Telescope.
Condensed matter & nanomaterials research labs
Condensed matter & nanomaterials labs investigate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of low-dimensional materials through both theory and experiment, advancing applications in energy storage, sensing and emerging devices.
Quantum, photonics & laser science research labs
These labs explore quantum information processing with trapped-ion platforms, high-resolution laser spectroscopy, integrated photonic devices and the behavior of light and matter at the nanoscale.
