Interstellar Medium Lab

About

Researches the structure, physical conditions and abundances of the interstellar medium.  We look at small scale structure (10’s to thousands of AU) using observations of stars using their proper motion to sample the interstellar medium at different points.  We also use binary stars to sample at larger distances.  Interstellar physical conditions are measured using the excitation of neutral Carbon atoms, while abundances are measured through absorption lines of dominant species.

Key Research Areas

  • small scale structure of the interstellar medium
  • physical conditions in the interstellar medium
  • abundances in the interstellar medium of our and other galaxies
