Basemann Lab

About

The Basemann Lab is centered at the interface of computational and experimental chemistry. We use the tools in both fields to discover, develop and understand catalysts on a fundamental level. We are focused on the development of sustainable catalysts for the future, using metals and materials that are less toxic to human health and the environment.

Research in the lab ranges from the purely experimental to purely computational pursuits, but most often involves complimentary approaches using both techniques. We are determined to use first row transition metals as catalysts for reactions in the synthesis of pharmaceutical, agrochemicals and other target molecules. We are particularly interested in Fe chemistry due to its abundance, low toxicity and unique reactivity. Our goal is to find ways to use Fe in established reactions and discover new opportunities to use Fe in organic synthesis.

Current research projects in the Basemann Lab include:

  1. Development of Stereoselective Catalysts for Fe Catalyzed Cross Coupling
  2. Development of Novel Low Valent Fe Catalysts for C-H Bond Activation
  3. Synthesis of New Ligand Classes for First Row Transition Metals
  4. Probing of Ligand Effects on Fundamental Reaction Mechanisms
  5. Developing New Tools for the Depolymerization of Plastic Wastes
